Irish Cream

May 11th, 2008 vincentdiamond Comments off

“Irish Cream” appears in Horse Tales and Rough Cut: Vincent Diamond Collected.

Most mornings I’m here with Jerry Sputmeir and Steve the Sleeve. Steve did some time back in the day, and well, we just like using the names from the old days. Makes it kinda homey. None of us were made guys but we worked the game. Jerry was into the numbers up in Brooklyn, and Steve did some loan sharking in addition to his regular burglary gigs. Me? I’m not spillin’. Suffice to say that the horses and me, we go way back.

Anyway, this one morning, I’m on the rail. It’s mid-January, cold for Florida, about forty, and misty. The horses come onto the track at the west end, skittering around like hockey pucks, cantering sideways, all antsy. These days, exercise riders wear vests and helmets. Some wear gloves to grip the reins. A spooked thoroughbred can take off and hit forty miles an hour, so if one starts to run away with you, you’d better have gloves to help you haul his ass in.

Exercise riders still ride butt up though, just like the old days. Nice.

This gray jogs by, tossing his head, kicking up dirt, being feisty, ya know? And when I see the kid on him, it arrows right through me.

Liam.

The strawberry blonde of his hair. The cool green eyes. The muscular chest.

It wasn’t just that this kid looked like Liam, it was the way he sat the horse. Some exercise riders use brute strength that’s where they get those fabulous arms but some use finesse and sweet talk with their charges. That’s what this kid was doing. I saw him leaning over the gray’s withers, stroking the horse’s neck, even its chest. That took some doing with the way this horse antsed around.

What it took was great legs.

I closed my eyes and remembered Liam’s legs. Their strength tight around me, so tight I couldn’t move or breathe or think. And didn’t want to.

Liam’s legs

Back in the fifties, things was different, and not just at the track. Men wore hats and suits everyday, and the only guys wearing jeans were the boys mucking out stalls. You tipped your hat to women, you were polite, you took care of business without a lot of drama.

That also meant if you walked the other way around the track, you didn’t advertise it. Sure, there were queer guys back in the fifties; we just didn’t make a big deal about it. I never saw guys living together like they do nowadays, least not in the tri-state area. Not in my crowd. My guys learned not to make jokes about women with me, and by the time I was in my thirties and running my own crew, it wasn’t a matter of discussion. Not in my earshot.

I wasn’t even at the track when I met Liam. It was at Leprechaun Farms down to Ocala. I was visiting the trainer””on certain uh, collections business, let’s just say””and he was giving me the tour of the barns. Horses never really did much for me, beyond what they could earn for me at the betting windows, but even I knew these were special animals. They gleamed. They had the look of conditioned athletes: the bulging muscle, the thick veins just beneath their smooth pelts. Healthy as, well, horses. It was May and the barn had fans running in all four corners. It was still warm, though, and I sweated beneath my pinstriped suit. I fanned myself with my hat.

Jimmy, the trainer guy, was talking my ear off about bloodlines and race cards and numbers. After ten minutes of this, I kinda tuned him out. Some splashing and whinnying came from the north side of the barn so I edged over, just to see what I can see, ya know? And hoping to catch a breeze.

What I caught was an eyeful.

There was a stallion on the padded area with the hose set-up. Tied on both sides of his head but he tried to rear up, front legs pawing at the air. He bellowed and I’ve never heard a sound like that “deeper than a regular whinny” more of a groaning. The way people might groan in bed.

Rough Cut: It’s almost here!

Well, technically it IS here on Amazon and from the gay media site TLA here:

TLA is gay owned and operated so you might consider spending your dollars there.

Rough Cut is showing as “in stock” both places. Woo hoo! I’m just dazzled that it looks so official and real.

I’m declaring Friday, May 2nd as Diamond Day around here, and I’ll be posting excerpts and having a contest or two for chapbooks and other goodies. Start thinking about the diamonds in your life–the people or pets or places that you treasure, the things that are truly gems for you. I want to hear about them on Friday!

And just indulge me in yet another silly woo hoo!

I have the BEST readers!

March 10th, 2008 Administrator Comments off

So, in an attempt to determine what methods are best for reaching potential readers, I was rude enough to email some of my current readers a little poll. Just 8 questions about how they found my stories, what works to get them to look at a book, and buy… You know, market research type questions.

My readers are the BEST in the world! Here’s why: within 5 hours, I had a half dozen responses; within 10 days, *every* *single* person responded. Some had additional comments; some had additional questions, but all were so very kind to take the time to give me a hand. It was such a nice thing for all of them to do.

Now admittedly, this is not a ginormous sample of thousands, or even hundreds, but it does give me a sense of what folks look for. A couple things surprised me: about half prefer book covers that show the time/locale/setting; about half prefer the standard nude male torso covers. They like free excerpts online, and they like postcards and bookmarks. Almost none attend any kind of reader’s conferences or conventions. Most knew me from e-books and online sites; only a couple buy print books only. Which makes sense, since many of the names came from doing chats and loops where I gave away freebies.

Still, interesting info.

Any other writers who have had similar or different responses from their readers? I’d love to hear others’ experiences.

Trying to get back to “normal”

February 17th, 2008 Administrator Comments off

Thanks to everyone who took the time to offer sympathy on the loss of my father. It was so kind of you all to do that! It was reassuring to see the virtual hugs. Thank you.

I’ve spent the last week helping Mom get things done as needed. I think the big stuff is covered or at least in progress; I still have to get Dad’s tax info together but that’s do-able in a weekend, and there’s no rush right now. So I’ve been able to spend the last couple of days on my own projects.

One nice bit of news: “Not to Forget” was selected for the Queer Collection from Fabulist Flash Press. Editor Gregory Kompes will be publishing the new edition later this year. Last year’s edition is available here:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/0979361206/?tag=vincentdiamon-20

I also got a private call for subs from an editor, and that always feels good. Plus, I sent out four stories to various markets; a couple went to general calls and one went with a personal referral so perhaps that story will have a bit of a leg up with the editor. One never knows.

Got a thanks, but no thanks from Shane Allison for his Firemen antho so that story needs to find a home. And I’d sent the Lethe story collection up to Steve before Dad got sick so that’s in progress. I made edits to the workshop story based on my teacher’s feedback and the other students’ input, and it felt good to get those changes done. The tweaks make the story stronger, no doubt.

And that’s it for work this weekend. I’m taking the rest of the day “off” to read, putter in the yard, supervise the cats in the yard, and watch trashy movies like “Running Scared” in which Paul “Pretty Boy” Walker uses the F-word at least a couple bazillion times. And shoots people.

My kinda mind candy right about now.

he’s gone

My dad passed away last night after a week in ICU. He knew his family was with him, and we were blessed to have had that time with him.

I’m taking some time off to help my mom and regroup so I anticipate some silence online for a bit. I’m exhausted but can’t sleep; stiff but kind of loopy, and sad sad sad.

Bad news- bogged down here

February 6th, 2008 Administrator 4 comments

My father had a massive heart attack over the weekend, and things have been hairy. On Monday, he wasn’t expected to live through the night; we signed a DNR and my brother flew down to say goodbye. Tuesday morning, he’d improved slightly with meds and blood and oxygen, and today he was even better.

The doctors are astounded. They really and truly prepared us for him to go.

He’s still in the hospital and will be for some time. And he may yet have another attack or develop new problems, but the immediate crisis appears to have eased.

Needless to say, I’m more than a little out of the loop with emails and whatnot so if you’ve sent me anything, may I please ask for your patience? I’m trying to keep up with the editing and proofing assignments I have on my plate, and the publishers I work for have been most kind and generous in working around this issue. Thank you!

I’ll update as time allows.

Lovely review for Animal Attraction!

September 29th, 2007 Administrator 2 comments

This feels really nice. All the hard work and tweaking and back-and-forth with the authors gets a nice pat on the ass from Rainbow Reviews, a new GLBT review site. The reviewer clearly read all the stories and understood the premise of the theme: not hard-core erotica, romantic erotica.

Huzzah!

Computer crash

June 9th, 2007 Administrator 4 comments

Ugh. After eight or so years with a comp and a couple of little kerfluffles that required repair along the way, if finally happened. The massive hard-drive failure so serious that the tech couldn’t even get it to boot up.

A moment of silence, please.

Most of my docs were backed up on a flash drive but I lost my OE and favorites so I’ll be spending some time tracking down URLs again. Two editing jobs will need to be re-done but a few were recovered and I’ve sent those off already to the publisher.

This weekend’s plans: work, work, work, watch some of the Belmont coverage, work, work, work.

Weekend work

March 24th, 2007 Administrator 2 comments

Accomplished so far this weekend:

I did not stare fruitlessly at my submissions table; I went through my calls
for subs, analyzed which was worth it ($100 vs. $500) of the two contests,
both of which are due next Sunday, and decided to focus on the bigger prize.
Yeah, I’m a mercenary whore. Plus, this story has a more fun voice to work
with. Sometimes, ya just gotta go with fun.

Its chance in the contest is probably quite limited but it’s a twist on the theme that I doubt anyone else will come up with.

1- I resubbed a piece that’s been at a print market since October with no response to follow-up emails regarding its status. Phuck ‘em. It went to an online market that usually responds pretty quickly. If the print market ends up wanting it, they can have reprint rights.

2- Made good progress on the book doctor project yesterday. I’ll do more today and
tomorrow. Right now, it’s just slash and hack with the occasional foray into hacked off material for further scene building and additional dialogue, with notes like “add new scene here” and “insert character hypnosis scene here” smooshed in. It’s challenging but fun. I’ll be doing lots more of this type of work for this client.

3- Did an initial ‘contracts are coming’ email to my AA authors. Made mental note to post the stories list here.

4- Took on a proofing gig for Torquere that was a little last minute but I can fit it in. Keeping Torquere happy with me is one of my goals in life.

5- Reset my office so that I have horizontal workspace to my left. The cats approve.

6- Packed away my “winter” (ha! this is phucking Phlorida!) clothes, got out
the summer duds.

7- Watched Smallville in the hopes that Tom Welling removed
his shirt. My hopes were dashed.

8- Stopped at the barn to see the babies. Two foals are less than 2 weeks old; the 4 week old is now allowed out in the paddock with Mom. He was tear assing around the grass, as fast as his skinny little legs could take him, only to buck, change direction and tear ass around in the other direction. It’s a scream. I luff him. When he’s in the stall he lets me rub his little horsey head and smooch him on the face. Did I mention that I luff him?

The writer/editor’s life

January 19th, 2007 Administrator 3 comments

Another Friday of Getting Things Done. Well, at least as an editor. Writing? Hhmm, haven’t done any of that for a while. Here’s hoping the writer’s workshop kicks my creative ass…

I was able to finish reviews for two Loose ID submissions and report on those. One is a probable no; the other I want to see the full MS on. Got edits returned to an author for her tweaks. She’s so imaginative and full of ideas! I’m looking forward to seeing her revise.

And I sent a couple of acceptances today for the Torquere Press Animal Attraction anthology. A dog story, one horse and one elephant piece. I want to have a nice mix of animals represented so any more dog stories that come in will have to be really stellar as I have three now. There’s one story in the “kinda maybe” box that I have to think about yet. The others I’ll be able to review soon.

If you’re an author who is considering subbing–you’ve still got time! I’m leaving tomorrow for a writer’s workshop and figured I’d give writers that extra time to sub. So, you’ve got ’til January 30th now. No excuses! Think fur, feathers, gills, muzzles, noses, paws, hooves and tails and get writing!
